Finance, construct/refurbish, operate, and maintain a hospital and ancillary facilities for Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust
The Queen Alexandra Hospital PFI project is a combination of new-build and retained estates work, together with financing, operation and maintenance, via a 35 year project agreement with Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust. The project comprises the construction of a new seven-storey building, as well as pathology and rehabilitation blocks and a two-storey car park, and also includes the refurbishment of some existing hospital facilities.
The hospital has 1,026 in-patient beds, 34 neonatal intensive care cots, three endoscopy suites and 20 main operating theatres.
Financial close occurred in December 2005. The value of the new-build works and retained estate refurbishment was £255 million and this was undertaken by Carillion Construction Limited (guaranteed by Carillion Plc) as part of a 4.5 year construction programme. Construction was completed in phases, with the main works delivered in June 2009.
