Delivering Real Potential.

The Oasis Academy Shirley Park incorporates a community library, nursery, primary phase, secondary phase and sixth form, and provides an all-through education experience for over 1,600 pupils between the ages of 3-19.

HICL's Croydon School project involves a 30 year concession for the financing, construction and operation of the secondary school and community library at the Oasis Academy Shirley Park in Croydon, along with routine and major lifecycle maintenance for the life of the concession.

InfraRed, HICL's Investment Manager, has partnered with Oasis Academy in a science-based project aimed at giving 30 students, aged between 12 and 13, a chance to put their skills to the test. The aim is to provide an inspiring experience that engages students and bridges the gap between education and employment, giving participants an insight into how knowledge and learning can be applied in ‘real life’ situations.

Working in five teams, the students were given the task to present a renewable technology business proposal. The challenge, which simulated a real-life workplace scenario, required the students to demonstrate their research, analysis and presentation skills. In the process they learned about renewable energy and assessed the risks and benefits of their respective propositions, ultimately making a case for investment to an InfraRed panel of judges.

The science-based project kicked-off with an inspirational site visit to the headquarters of RES, a world leading renewable energy operator where the teams were treated to a series of hands-on workshops by InfraRed and RES staff that offered a great introduction to the world of renewables.

The teams also met their InfraRed mentors who provided ongoing support and guidance through the following six weeks as the teams got to grips with their individual assignments. During this period InfraRed ran three teach-ins at the school to further supplement the teams’ learning and development.

The culmination of the project saw InfraRed host the students and their teachers at its offices as the teams presented their results to the panel of judges who selected the winning team based on their resourceful research, compelling business case and strong presentation.

Following the first complete run through of the project in 2015, Oasis Academy’s Executive Principal, Louise Lee, stated “We really welcome the partnership we are developing with InfraRed. Real-life, enriching experiences like this give our students an invaluable insight into the opportunities that are out there and inspire them to achieve.”
